Navigating the Season with Care

Safe and Healthy Holiday Tips for CHC Patients

The holiday season is a time for celebration, but it can also bring added stress, health challenges, and safety concerns. For Indiana Community Health Center (CHC) patients, it’s important to stay healthy and safe throughout the festivities. Here are some tips and tricks to help you enjoy the holidays while prioritizing your well-being.

1. Manage Stress and Mental Health

The holidays can be overwhelming, especially for those managing chronic conditions. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), anxiety, and depression can be triggered by changes in routine, family dynamics, and financial stress. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help reduce stress.

  • Resource: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your CHC’s mental health services. Many centers offer counseling and therapy, both in-person and virtually.

2. Stay Active

With colder weather and busier schedules, it’s easy to skip your regular exercise routine. But physical activity is crucial for managing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Consider indoor workouts or take short walks if weather permits.

  • Resource: Ask your CHC for exercise classes or programs specifically tailored to individuals with chronic conditions. Many CHCs offer free or low-cost fitness resources, such as virtual fitness classes or community walk programs.

3. Watch Your Diet

Holiday meals are often rich in sugar, fat, and alcohol, which can be hard on your body—especially if you’re managing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Try to balance indulgence with healthy options like roasted vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Stay hydrated and enjoy holiday treats in moderation.

  • Resource: Your CHC’s nutritionist or dietitian can provide personalized dietary advice. Many CHCs also offer nutritional workshops or one-on-one sessions to help you make healthy choices.

4. Keep Up with Medications and Appointments

The holidays can disrupt routines, so be sure to stay on top of your medications and healthcare appointments. Set reminders to take your medication and refill prescriptions ahead of time to avoid running out. If you have any health concerns, reach out to your CHC provider before the holidays to ensure you’re feeling your best.

  • Resource: Contact your CHC pharmacy to ensure you have enough medication for the holidays and to discuss any medication management services they may offer, such as home delivery or medication synchronization.

5. Socialize Safely

Gatherings and celebrations can increase the risk of catching and spreading illnesses, especially during flu season. If you’re attending parties or events, practice good hygiene: wash your hands frequently, wear a mask if needed, and avoid crowded indoor spaces when possible.

  • Resource: Visit your CHC for flu shots and other vaccinations. Many CHCs offer free or low-cost vaccinations during flu season, which is especially important for individuals with chronic conditions.

6. Prioritize Sleep

With all the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to neglect your sleep schedule. However, getting enough rest is crucial for your immune system and overall health. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and try to maintain a consistent bedtime to help keep your energy up and your stress levels down.

  • Resource: If you’re struggling with sleep, consider reaching out to your CHC for sleep hygiene education or assistance with sleep disorders. Some CHCs offer sleep therapy or can help with referrals.

7. Stay Connected

Isolation can be particularly hard during the holidays, especially for those with limited mobility or who live alone. Reach out to friends, family, or community groups to stay connected. If you’re feeling lonely or need assistance, your CHC can help connect you with support services or mental health resources.

  • Resource: Your CHC may offer peer support programs or community groups. Some centers also have volunteer programs that help connect patients with social or wellness activities, reducing feelings of isolation.
