How staff shortages complicates contraceptive access

There is no arena of American healthcare where the shortage of workers isn’t felt in some way, whether it’s in long wait times or an inability to get an appointment at all. Patients seeking contraceptive care run into these same issues—but the factors driving contraceptive access barriers are multilayered and complex.

“The national healthcare workforce shortage is not a problem unique to contraception,” explains Lisa Goldthwaite, MD, MPH, an OB-GYN, Upstream clinical advisor, and adjunct clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. “But when you look at issues of contraceptive access, the healthcare workforce shortage only exacerbates already existing barriers to contraceptive care.”
