Medically Underserved Areas/Populations

Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) may be a whole county or a group of contiguous counties, one or a group of townships, or one or a group of census tracts in which residents have a shortage of personal health services. 

Medically Underserved Populations (MUPs) may include groups of persons who face economic, cultural or linguistic barriers to health care.

Federal opportunities available to Medically Underserved Areas/Populations include:

• Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) grants for the planning, development, or operation of community health centers under section 330 of the Public Health Service Act
• Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-alikes which meet the definition of community health center. These are not funded but receive some benefits of FQHCs.
• J-1 visa waiver physicians
