All specialist applications will be reviewed and held for submission to ISDH until January 1, 2012. Please note that IPHCA has recently moved and all applications must be sent to the new address: 429 N Pennsylvania St, Ste 333, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Applications sent to the old address will not be received. For more information please review the updated 2012 J-1 Visa Waiver Guidelines here.
TThe Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, successor to the Immigration and Naturalization Services of the U.S. Department of Justice, is the federal agency that grants J-1 Visa Waivers. ![]() The goal of the Indiana J-1 Visa Waiver Program is to improve accessibility to health care for underserved areas by supporting J-1 Visa Waiver requests on behalf of Foreign Medical Graduates who have obtained a J-1 Visa for graduate medical studies in the United States (“J-1 physicians”). Based on the information provided with a request, The Indiana State Department of Health may recommend a waiver of the requirement that a J-1 physician must return to the physician’s home country for a period of two years after completing the graduate medical studies. The Indiana J-1 Visa Waiver Program gives first preference to primary care physicians (family or general practice, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and general internal medicine) and psychiatrists in federally designated Primary Care Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA), Medically Underserved Areas (MUA), or Medically Underserved Populations (MUP). Psychiatrists can be employed in any of these shortage areas or in Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas (Mental HPSA). Primary Care Applications will be reviewed and submitted to ISDH as they are received. Specialist applications will be reviewed and submitted to ISDH for case-by-case consideration after January 1, 2012. Please click here to view the updated 2012 J-1 Visa Waiver Guidelines. Indiana will accept applications from facilities outside designated underserved areas if the candidate’s practice site can document over 50% of its patients seen over the previous 12 months resided in an underserved area. In order to document this exception, a site must submit 12 months of data containing unduplicated, de-identified patient records containing a unique patient number and address. The information must be submitted electronically in Excel format to Ray Guest, Primary Care Office Manager at rguest@isdh.in.gov. The Indiana Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) is under contract with the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) to handle the initial review and processing of the J-1 Visa Waiver Applications for Indiana.
