LaPorte Regional Health System became completely smoke-free inside and out in November 2007. (7/17/2008) Newest NorthShore Facility Breaks Ground Summary: Officials for the NorthShore Health Centers broke ground Wednesday morning for what will become a 26,000-square-foot, two-story comprehensive health care clinic at 2598 Central Ave. that will offer family practice, pediatric and obstetrical medical services. NorthShore already operates two clinics in Portage and opened a Lake Station site in December in the offices of Dr. Fernando Rivera just east of the new clinic. To access this article, click here. (7/14/2008) Lack of Citizenship, Pride Can Keep Some from Seeking Help Summary: While immigrant communities are growing in Indiana, members of those communities can have difficulty accessing needed services. This can be especially true for those who are not U.S. citizens. According to Veronique Leblanc, CEO of Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic, "Being illegal creates other issues because you can't get services. It's kind of a snowball effect." (7/14/2008) Undocumented Qualify for Some, Not All, Public Programs Summary: Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic in Lafayette may ask patients a number of questions, but citizenship status isn’t one of them. (6/26/2008) Visclosky Announces $400,000 for Northwest Indiana’s Community Health Centers Summary: Congressman Pete Visclosky announced that he has secured $400,000 for Northwest Indiana’s community health centers to purchase important equipment. Northwest Indiana’s five community health centers provide critical medical care to the under- and uninsured who would otherwise struggle to find quality healthcare. The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill. The House Appropriations Committee is expected to approve the bill today and it must be approved by both the House and Senate before it can be signed into law by the President. (6/26/2008) Community Health Centers in Line for Funding Summary: Federal funding could help cover the cost of an electronic record-keeping system at Community Health Centers in northwest Indiana. The needed $400,000 is part of an appropriations bill awaiting congressional approval. The money would help five Centers purchase needed equipment. Electronic record-keeping would help the Centers better track patients' overall well-being, said Beth Wrobel, CEO of HealthLinc (formerly Hilltop Community Health Center) in Valparaiso. (5/13/2008) Community Foundation Awards Much Needed Funds to Nonprofits Summary: The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette recently awarded a $20,000 grant to Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic, Inc. (TCHC) to expand the dental practice, which currently serves 1,400 people. Through this grant, TCHC President and CEO Veronique LeBlanc hopes to provide care to more patients and gain access to better technology. (5/13/2008) Health Centers Get $1.75 Million Grant Summary: Madison County Community Health Centers (MCCHC) recently received a $1.75 million grant to expand facilities and dramatically increase the number of patients served. The grant was announced by Ann Alley of the Office of Primary Health Care within the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH). Through this new funding, MCCHC President and CEO Tony Malone intends to increase the number of low-income patients seen by the organization’s physicians from 18,000 to 50,000.
