Careers at Community Health Centers

A Community Health Center (CHC) is a health care home located in the community where the patient lives, providing high quality primary health care and related services at fees based on patient income and family size.

CHCs located in a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) are eligible to become National Health Service Corps sites (explained below).  Qualifying HPSA scores are given to areas determined to have a shortage of health professionals; they may have specific shortages of primary care, dental, or mental health providers.  HPSAs can be urban or rural areas, special population groups, or medical or other public facilities.

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC), a division of the Health Resources and Services Administration (part of the US Department of Health and Human Services), places health professionals in organizations within communities of need.  These health professionals can be either Scholars or Loan Repayors.  In return for Scholarship or Loan Repayment opportunities, these health professionals sign a contract with the work site for a specific duration of service.

The Indiana Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) coordinates the NHSC Program for Indiana, through a contract with the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH).  IPHCA connects health professionals with NHSC work sites and provides technical support and consultation.
